Hi-Lo Diner is a fairly new restaurant opened at the desirable neighborhood, Longfellow. Hi-Lo has always been one of the favorites among diners but it’s popularity sky-rocketed after Adele secretly dined this past July. I have always wanted to dine here but somehow never got a chance. So one fine day (well it was more of a rainy cold gloomy summer day), we made our way to this cute retro diner!
Hi-Lo has a lot of items on their menu but their popular and definitely the most unique one has to be their Hi-Tops. I have never had Hi-Tops before and quite frankly I didn’t even know what they were prior to this. I didn’t even know how they looked like. So we ditched everything else that was in the menu and geared for an adventure. We ordered two high tops and some drinks just in case we need to force it down 😛
So what are Hi-Tops? They have nothing to do with sneakers and everything to do with a beautiful concoction of doughnut like base and various toppings and ingredients. We ordered a Po’ Boy Dough Boy and a Notorious P.I.G; clearly because of the names. Just kidding!
Luckily we didn’t have to force anything down our throats. Both the Hi-Tops were better than what I expected. I love jumbo Argentinian red shrimps and cilantro lime aioli which is what Po’ Boy Dough Boy is. So clearly it was a no-brainer choice.
Notorious P.I.G…well who doesn’t love some Cuban flair? Pulled pork with some corn salsa, black bean topped with sour cream and a sunny side up egg. YES PLEASE!
The only picture I have of my drink.
Drinks were good too. Actually they were really good and better than from some places that actually specialize on drinks. I am surprised this is just a diner. It did give us a little day time buzz. We got a traditional mimosa and something else that I can’t seem to remember at this point. I just remember the second one being way stronger than mimosa.
Overall this is a unique eatery. It has that retro vibe without being too old. They also have a little outdoor seating area. It would be nice to sit outside and sip some summer drinks. We both loved Hi-Tops. A lot of people might argue that it is nothing special but I loved that someone came up with that idea and combination. You have to respect that creativity!
The best part, they are open from 7:30 am in the morning till 12:30 am on weekdays and 1:30 am on weekends 😉
